Workshop Information

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, the UW-Madison will provide a variety of field trips, workshops and tours for Science Olympiad teams participating in the National Science Olympiad competition Saturday, May 21, 2011.

Plan to arrive on campus on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, to take advantage of the many educational opportunities we'll be offering on Thursday alone! As an added benefit to your teams, we provided our field trip, workshop and tour leaders with Science Olympiad event descriptions so they could (as applicable) directly relate their activity to Science Olympiad competition events. These activities will provide an enrichment opportunity for all those who participate.

Scheduled start times for the 1 1/2-hour activity time blocks are 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Workshops that run the entire morning or afternoon will begin at either 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

There will be a $1 charge per student, per field trip to offset the transportation and materials costs.

Coaches should register students for Thursday's activities. Your online team-registration deadline is May 15; registration for these events is on a first-come, first-served basis. When an event is full, we will close it.

Wildlife ecologist Joe Hickey tabbed DDT as the cause of the peregrine falcon's decline in the United States. This work led to the first DDT ban and, ultimately, to the bird's resurgence.

First Chemical Synthesis of a Gene

Biochemist Har Gobind Khorana shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1968 for research that was essential to understanding how DNA is translated into proteins. His work at the Institute for Enzyme Research completed the puzzle of which particular nucleic acid sequences code for each of the twenty-one amino acids that make up all proteins. He was also the first person to synthesize a gene chemically.
